Australian tree and census

Lyn Hart-Dowlen wrote to me on 7th February 2012 outlining her connections with William CUMPSTON. I was delighted to hear from her as she is not only related to me but her information has solved a 10 year old problem with the missing child to this family.

'My Great Great Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Raby nee Cumpston, who I believe was the daughter of William Cumpston and Jane Lidgett.

During a trip to the East Riding Archives in Beverley, I located the parish record of Elizabeth's marriage to Robert Raby at Holy Trinity Church 28Oct1844. They married in the presence of Jane Cumpston and W. Curtis. The name of Elizabeth's father is given as William Cumpston and his occupation as a pilot.

The 1841 census puts Elizabeth Cumpston (age 20, birth year 1821) at Vicar Lane, Holy Trinity, Hull, living with Jane Cumpston (age 40, birth year 1801). They were living by independant means and there is no mention of any other Cumpston's living with them at that address that particular night.

Elizabeth appears again on the 1851 census, this time as Elizabeth Raby, living at Cleaveland Street, Sutton, Hull, with Daniel Small (Chelsea Pensioner, aged 84, born Scotland in 1767), two of her children, Ann Elizabeth and Ellen Jane, plus a number of Cumpstons i.e. Harry H, Henry, Emma and Jessie. On this census Elizabeth's birth year is given as 1824 and she is aged 27.

William's obituary mentions that he left a widow and 5 children, but I could only find 4 on his tree. Could Elizabeth be the 5th?

Perhaps more convincing though was finding Daniel Small the Chelsea Pensioner in the index and on turning to the relevant page, finding a section on the 1851 census page mentioned above, where I discovered Jessie Cumpston was in fact Jane Lidgett Cumpston, the other Cumpston's listed presumably being Elizabeth's siblings.

For interest, Elizabeth's daughter Ellen Jane married Philip Taffinder 28Sep1868 at St Pauls, Sculcoates and their daughter Ann Taffinder married George Hart 01Aug1891 at St Peter's, Drypool. Ann and George Hart's son James Hart was my Grandfather and my father is also James Hart.

Lyn and I plan to meet soon and share more details.
