Will of Robert Cumpston Brough Sowerby Westmorland 18th May 1804 Proved 9th July 1804

 

In the name of God Amen

I Robert Cumpston the elder of Brough Sowerby in the parish of Brough in the County of Westmorland Yeoman being infirm in body but of sound mind memory and understanding do make this my last Will and Testament in manner following that is to [say] Imprimis I will and direct that all my just debts which I owe at the time of my death together with my Funeral Expenses and the charges of proving this my will shall in the first place be paid and satisfied

 

Item 1 Give and bequest unto my wife Margaret Cumpston all my Household Furniture except my six silver Teaspoons one s wine glass one Feather Bed and three Bed Quilts which I Give and bequeath unto my Daughter Margaret Wright And whereas I have Mortgage Deeds or …… of reversions of my son in law James Wright House in Penrith my mind and will is that the Interest arising from the same shall be paid and applied to my daughter Margaret Wright wife of James Wright of parish aforesaid Currier during her natural life for her own sole and separate use and disposal without the control of Intermeddling of her husband or any other Husband she may afterwards marry and my Mind and Will is that the receipt or receipts of my said Daughter whether sole or married and not withstanding her coverture shall from time to time be a good and sufficient Discharge for the same or any part thereof and from and after the principal sum to go and be paid by my Executor to the Child or Children of the said Margaret Wright lawfully begotten share and share alike when they and each of them shall attain the age of Twenty one years

 

And as to and for and concerning all the rest and residue of my Personal Estate and Effects whatsoever or wheresoever or of what nature or kind soever the same or any part thereof shall be found situate standing lying or being I give devise and bequeath the same and every part and parcel thereof according to the different natures tenures and qualities thereof unto my Son Robert Cumpston his heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns he paying thereout all my just Debts Funeral Expenses and the Charges of proving this my will as aforesaid and doing and performing the bequests herein before given And I do hereby constitute and appoint my said son Robert Cumpston Executor of this my last will and Testament and I do hereby revoke all former and other Wills by my at any time heretofore made As Witness my hand and seal this eighteenth day of May in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Four

This will was proved at London the ninth day of July in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and four before the Worshipful Samuel Pearce Doctor of Laws Surrogate of the Right Honourable Sir William Wynne Knight Doctor of Laws Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the oath of Robert Clumpston the son of the deceased and the sole Executor named in the said will to whom Admon was granted a full and singular the Goods Chattels and credits of the said deceased He having been first sworn duly to Administer.

There are Robert Cumpston entries in Brough back to 1424 in the Manorial records.  The earlier ones are placed in the pink box and whilst it is difficult to prove their relationship to the people mentioned in this will, I would welcome any information that readers have.
