I am in contact with 3 CUMPSTON researchers who have interests in Staffordshire. I am grateful for their contribution to this data - but it is 'work in progress' and we would welcome in put from anyone with further information.
FAMILY 1 JOHN AND MARY (MARU)
John Cumpston - sometimes spelt Compston - b 1806 in Sedgley is my colleague Helen's 4 x grandfather.
John Cumpston, born abt 1806 place unknown married Mary (also referred to as Maru) time and place unknown.
Had 4 children: William 1832, Naomi 1837, Emma 1842.
Richard had two sons:- Thomas & John, Thomas is her 2 x grandfather.
William had seven children - John, Joseph, Samuel, Edward, Mary, Frank, Alice.
John went from being a limestone miner to property owner (Cumpston Row) with the aid of his mortgages and Limestone Charter Master employing 15 men.
There is mention from an industrial archeology site: "two Charter Masters at Hurst Hill John Cumpston at 'New work' and Joseph Baker at 'New Shaft'" Near Bilston.
We are trying to establish how they relate to Compstons/Compsons/Cumpstons in Penn & Upper Penn, Staffs.
I have some data regarding Penn, including in 1744 with Abigail COMPSON who was married there.
The earliest entry I have for the county however is:
Year tree no. Parish Ref Address Place Surname First name
1599 Kingswinsford Prob11/93 Kingswinsford Comson Thomas for whom I have his will.
I have included my Sedgley data here which includes John and Ann:
