Robert Compston Kendal

The following was written in 1901 suggesting that Robert was a young man and his parents were still alive.  It is fair to estimate his birth around 1870-1880

WESTMORLAND GAZETTE, KENDAL, February 9 1901/ Here and There

VOL. LXXXIV. - NO. 5136 Established May 23, 1818 REGISTERED. PRICE ONE PENNY

ROBERT COMPSTON, of the Diamond Fields Horse, has written home to his parents in Kendal from the Hoopstad Hospital, describing a war incident in which the Boers scraped acquaintance with him according to their peculiar fashion.

PRIVATE COMPSTON formed one of a night picket of four men. It was pitch dark. The Boers crept up round them unseen till they were within a few yards. The strangers were challenged by one of the picket, who fell at once with a bullet through his leg. COMPSTON was hit three times.

One bullet whipped off his hat and ploughed through his hair, leaving a superficial wound two inches long on his skull. Then he was shot through the left shoulder; and while he was considering what was likely to happen next, he got a couple of nasty wounds from a Martini bullet on the back of the right hand.

The picket party held out till three of the four were disabled, and then surrendered. The Boers thereupon came round them "like a swarm of bees," stripped them of arms, ammunition, spurs, coats, rugs, "and everything we had got, and left us to get back as best we could."

PRIVATE COMPSTON's practical comment on the affair is that it has caused him to write with difficulty, but he is getting on nicely.'
