Cumpston Research

date: 2011-06-22

I was delighted to hear from Regina about her relative Jehu CUMPSTEN. She has provided all the information on this page.

She has done a huge amount of work on Find a Grave  and you can check out her blog at
She wrote 'I recently discovered a CUMPSTEN in my family tree and noticed that your blog said Cumpston and variants.

I'd be glad to share what I know about Mr. Cumspten. I do know that he served as a Confederate in the American Civil War.'

This is the first time that I have had a CUMPSTON in Louisiana and Regina sent so much material I was able to give Jehu his own page.

Many thanks Regina!

Regina' relationship to this family is as follows:

She is not a blood relative.

John Cumpsten is her first cousin four times removed's wife's sister's husband.

Here's the breakdown:

Dorothy - her mother

Gladys (nee Montgomery) Crew - her mother

Oda Montgomery - her father

Theodore Montgomery - his father

"August" Montgomery - his father

Pearson Montgomery - his brother

Wallace Montgomery - his son

Mary Jane (nee McCulloch) Montgomery - his wife

Margaret (nee McCulloch) Cumpsten - her sister

John Cumpsten - her husband
Regina continues:
'As stated in the Find A Grave memorial, I believe he was married to both Martha Raynal McCulloch and her sister, Margaret McCulloch. I've attached the two obituaries I have for him. '

Regina wrote again
'I found the civil war cards for Mr. Cumpsten. There are 32 pages from his file. Most are just "check ins". I thought you might be interested in the naming variations used in his file though. They finally settled on "Cumstein" for the majority of the file. There were several spelling variations of his name used on his Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of Louisiana. They include: J.J. Cumpstein, Jehu Cumpstein, J.J. Cumpsten, Jehu Cumstein, John Cumstein and J. Compstead.

Also, I found who appears to be John's brother, Zachary Cumpsten.  I've not added a memorial for him on Find A Grave because I was not able to find any information on his burial.

I also found a book on Google Books, that has a family story about Rev. H. J. Cumpsten.  He was the oldest son of J.J. Cumpsten. It includes a photo of the Rev. and his wife. Here is the link: Meeting the Train: Hagerman,New Mexico and Its Pioneers

Lastly, I've linked and updated all the Cumpsten family memorials that I put on Find A Grave. I am in the process of contacting those who manage the Cumpstens in the Hagerman, New Mexico Cemetery.'

Thanks once more Regina!
